Merry Christmas!!

Four months old!!

Here I am again!! I have been having a hard time sleeping through the night again - I am starting to roll and I think I wake myself up! I started rice cereal this week, too - I had a hard time eating with a spoon at first, but I really like it now!

I can bear weight on my legs, hold my head steady; I smile, laugh, and coo; I can also grasp my toys for a short time. AND I can almost roll over from my back to tummy!! Watch out, Mom and Dad!!

I'm three!

Months, that is.

It's been busy around here! I got to see lots of people this month, including all of Mama's friends from Stamford. I also visited with Pappa's friend and their new baby, Layne. We walked across the bridge together! This month I started laughing at the silly things Mama and Pappa do, and I am so strong that I can pull the toys on my bouncy seat so they play music. I'm sleeping much better for naps, but only when I'm swaddled.

Oh, and Mama started work, so that's why she's not writing - she has no time!!

Already proving her momma wrong

My dear husband took Stella to her 3 month checkup today (more on that in the next post), and the doctor said we should NOT be letting her nurse to sleep, we should be trying to get her to put herself to sleep ("drowsy but awake" is the lingo). I've tried this a few times, but Stella always ends up screaming at me, and nothing but nursing will calm her down. So of course, I share this with Gian, I'm freaking out b/c I think I've created a terrible, unbreakable habit and I'm dreading bedtime.

So what happens? Gian and I put her down "drowsy but awake" and... no tears, barely a fuss. She is asleep in minutes.

Already making me out to be the liar, the bad guy, Stella just has to prove her mom wrong!!

This is not new, this proving me wrong. She slept through the night at my parents' house after I warned them of her nightly habitual wakings, and I told everyone how she loves to fall asleep in the carseat and then dear Stella proceeded to scream and cry halfway from East Hampton to Colchester.

HOWEVER, if these are the ways she is going to prove me wrong in life, I'll take it. Well, maybe not the carseat screaming, but sleeping??? It's all good.

A few moments to myself.

So Stella is FINALLY napping. She has been a great night sleeper, but her daytime napping skills are practically non-existent. She will only sleep for about an hour in the morning, and then she takes 1/2 hour catnaps throughout the rest of the day (read, Mama can't get much done!). But today she is all swaddled up, pacifier in mouth, swinging away - and it is working! So with the few minutes I have left, I thought I'd blog.

I start work next week. As nice as it will be to have adult conversations (well, as much as you can have in an elementary school) and to see new faces and new surroundings (other than my home), I am pretty torn up about leaving my little girl in the care of strangers. Am I going to miss those milestones that are so important in a mom's life? Will she remember who I am? Will she know how much I love her, even though I'm leaving her behind all day?

Will I be able to keep up with work, being a mom, and being a wife? As I've mentioned in the past, I like a clean house. I've gotten pretty good at keeping it that way: I've divided my chores among the 5 workdays, instead of trying to get everything accomplished all on one day (usually Sunday!). This has worked well; I have manageable, feasible tasks to complete, and my weekends are free to spend time with Gian. I'm hoping I can keep to this schedule, so that I can still have weekends free, at least from house work, if not school work.

At least the first week won't be so bad - I'm not leaving her with strangers, but with family. The parents and Auntie Holly have decided to come "help" (more like getting face time with Stella), but it will help me ease into the new schedule. I'm hoping this will help get me on top of my game before I have to send her off to strangers.

As for Stella updates, she has started laughing - not quite outloud yet, but getting there. She has also become fairly good at grabbing the rings on her bouncy seat and activity mat, and I just put her in the exersaucer today and her feet finally (but just barely) touch the ground. She's huge, too: 24 inches and 13lb4oz at her 2 month appointment! Those extra 2 weeks of wombtime must have been good for her. :-)

So, while she naps, one would think that I would be working on lesson plans, preparing my items for school, labeling her items for day care....

But no. I sit here, watching her swing away. Because next week, I won't be able to.

Two months already!

It's so hard to believe that Stella is two months old already. She is going today to get her first round of shots - I am not so excited about this! We'll also find out how much she weighs, we are guessing a lot as she is so big!!

JUST GOT BACK: she's 13 lb 4 oz, 24 inches long, with a head circumference of 15 inches. In other words, she's huge.

In big news, STELLA IS SLEEPING THROUGH THE NIGHT. I don't care if I'm jinxing us by writing it out, it is super exciting to get a full night's sleep as a new parent!! We have been putting her down to sleep around 10pm, and she wakes up around 6:30am. Woo hoo!! (Of course, now that I've shared it with the world, she'll probably regress tonight...)

Stella is SO interactive now. She smiles and coos, and loves to look at your face. She is mesmerized by her bouncy seat and mobile - she will go from all-out wailing and screaming to quiet cooing in about 30 seconds if you put her in the crib and turn on the mobile!!

Stella made her first trip to see the grandparents last week. She got to meet Great Grandpa Vechinsky, who is 97 and was so delighted to meet his second Great Granddaughter.

What a big difference over the past two months:

She is so darn cute.

I'm going to be a real Mom right now: look at my beautiful daughter!!

One month

Wow, did it go fast! Stella is doing great - 11 lb at her checkup! She got some baby acne, poor thing. Stella loves car rides (well, Mom and Dad love them b/c she falls asleep so easily) and bouncing on a knee. She's able to pick her head up when on her activity mat.

Mom and Dad are exhausted, but loving parenthood.

Forgot to mention the best part....

During the C-section, I knew when the doctor had gotten Stella out; even though she didn't cry (as the doctors had to suction her) everyone was very excited and stating the time, etc.

No one said if she was a boy or a girl. I think they either forgot or they were too worried about her vitals. Which was fine... I knew I'd find out eventually.

But Gian leaned down and whispered to me, "It's a little girl."

I love my husband.

Stella's Big Arrival.

The short version:

Stella Chiara arrived at 11:44 pm on August 22. She weighed 8 lbs 3 oz, and she measured 21 inches long. I started my induction on August 21 at 7:00 pm, which led to a long labor on Friday, and eventually had a C-section late Friday (despite the doctor's best efforts to commit to a natural birth). Even though this was exactly the birth I feared, I couldn't be happier with the final result!

For the more detailed version, read on after the photos.

I went to the hospital at 6:oo pm for my scheduled induction (I never got into labor on my own, even at a week past due). After about an hour of questions and registration, I started on Cervidil. The nurse gave me something to help me sleep, but being in a new bed, with people constantly coming in and out of the room to check something on me, I didn't sleep more than 3 hours Friday night.

Friday morning I started Pitocin to get contractions started. I had dilated from 0 to 1.5 cm overnight, so the hope was that the Pit would get the cervix to open more. Two hours after the first dose of Pit, I was only 2 cm. They upped the dosage, two hours later I was 2.5 cm. They upped it again. At this point the contractions were really bad, and one came right after the other with no recovery time, so I opted for an epidural. Wow, what a relief - I napped for a large part of the afternoon.

Again, the doctor measured me and I was 4 cm. My parents came by to see me, and Gian and I both thought that the baby wouldn't be here until Sunday. However another couple hours and I was 6 cm. Then I started having the urge to push, and I was at 7-9 cm really quickly!!

I pushed for an hour, but with each push the baby's heartrate dropped a lot. The doctor said that there was too much stress on the baby at this point, and that the only safe measure would be to have a c-section. I went into surgery at 11:15 and Stella Chiara joined us at 11:44.

Apparently Stella's head was tilted when it entered the birth canal, and she was wedged on top of it, preventing her from straightening out and moving forward. She has two "skidmarks" on her upper forehead from my pelvic bones.

Also, the sacral part of my spine is posterior, or concave, which made it virtually impossible for Stella to get into position for active labor. My doctor said had she known this, she would have probably scheduled a c-section right away.

I was taken to recovery, where I stayed until about 2:00 am, drifting in and out of sleep. I was checked every two hours after that until 7:00 am.

Over 24 hours after starting the process, I was so relieved to finally have our little one with us. And I can't begin to tell you how surprised we were that it was girl - so many people guessed it was a boy, that we had pretty much committed ourselves to a little boy! Gian has been a great support and an even better Dad (I have a great diaper story for another post)! It has been a long 48 hours, but I will write more as I think of it, and post pictures as they are taken. Thanks for all of your warm wishes and congratulations!

Latest update from the doctor.

So today I went in for my weekly appointment and the doctor also did a biophysical profile - basically, an ultrasound to make sure the baby is still growing and doing what babies do. Everything at the ultrasound was fine, we even got to see Baby D's face:

Gian got nervous because it appears that Baby D has a Cro-Magnon forehead, like he does!

Then I went in for my 40 week appointment - or 41 weeks, according to the doctors. Anyway, there is no dilation yet, so I am currently scheduled for an induction to start next Friday evening. Hopefully things will get going sooner than that naturally!!

In other news, we took the pupperdoos to the local watering hole to get in a good swimming workout. Amelie was a bit of a nutcase, as there were children, other dogs, and lots of water around - I've never seen such a nervous Nellie! But I think she had fun, regardless. The two of them will be sleeping like babies tonight.

(Yes, I did throw the toy like a girl, but I had a very yippity dog on a leash to deal with at the same time!)

40 weeks - and only belly pics with Gian.

Can you believe it? We love taking pictures, and we never took any until today of the two of us together! Oh well, better late than never. Poor hubbie's at work on night shift tonight and possibly tomorrow - hope he's doing ok!! I miss him!!

Nursery walls are done.

My loving husband brought the tools upstairs to help me out and finally the nursery is completely D-O-N-E.... I think. The only other thing I am thinking of doing is adding a name decal over the crib... but we can't do that yet, since I don't know whether to order the boy's name or the girl's name yet! Click the picture to go to the Nursery set of photos on Flickr.

39 Week Belly Shots

Yep, still pregnant! Told the docs my due date was NOT the 6th. Had my check-up today, all is well. I scheduled another appointment, but the receptionist added, "of course, we hope to see you at the hospital before then!" They are also going to give me an induction date when I go back next week, again, "just in case." I'm not concerned.... anxious beyond belief, but not concerned about going "over" a specific date.

Got the accessories all ordered or done for the nursery, so hopefully we can hang everything up and get a picture of that before the chaos ensues.

Oh, and did you hear, we have mice? My crazy dog thinks she is part feline and has been doing a great job of pouncing on them so I can scoop up their little bodies and chuck them into the apple orchards. It has been nearly 24 hours without a sighting so far today, so maybe that means Amelie got them all!!

The cats, however, had better find another way to earn their keep in this house!

What size is Baby D-Lish?

Two days early, but it's the last in-belly estimate....

It's finally a watermelon! From thebump:
At week 37, your pregnancy is considered full term, meaning baby is likely to thrive after birth. Baby spends these last weeks in preparation for the outside world… meaning careful refinement of the blink, suck, inhale and exhale. Meconium, which you’ll probably find in the first diaper, is accumulating in the intestines. If (okay, as) you worry about giving birth, consider what it’s like for the little one. During the journey out of your womb, baby will produce more stress hormones than any other time in life.

Stretch marks suck.

That is all.

(I think I would have been more OK with them had I gotten them earlier in the pregnancy - being in the homestretch and getting them is like, placing second in a race that you dominated the whole time and then suddenly lost to someone who came out of nowhere).

Ugh. I'm going to go slather myself with all sorts of pregnancy products for the next 3-4 weeks in hopes that they will not grow or, maybe?, go away!?

And the polls are in....

According to you all, I am ....

having a boy (66%)
who will be born somewhere between Aug. 6 and 13 (46%)
and will be average-sized (20%).

Love the six of you who told me Baby D would be a holy cow big baby(what!! do I really look that big??)

Also love the 12 of you who think Baby D is coming after Aug. 13 - that's what I'm hoping for!!

Pictures, pictures, pictures

I uploaded some pictures to Flickr tonight:
1. Work shower (from June 12!)

2. Belly and sonogram pictures (randoms, most have been posted here before.)

3. Added a folder for "other stuff": gifts, nursery, fun things we see and do. More to be added as we go.

Officially a D-Lish myself.

So I finally made it down to Social Security this week and got my name changed. I kept K as my middle name (just like my mom did with her maiden name) so I have an ultra-long name overall - 22 letter and a hyphen! whew! But I just couldn't bear to part with any of it. I've been JL for so long now - in fact, my college friend Rebecca ONLY calls me JL, which I like! - that it felt weird to part with it. And with no boys to pass it on, I had to keep my maiden name for Dad.

On the to-do list today:
-call Salvation Army for a pick up.
DONE: they won't pick up b/c I don't have enough stuff!! argh!!
-put the office back together.
DONE! Only took the extended length "Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring" to accomplish....
-take pictures for the blog (I know, it's been THREE long weeks since you saw my awesome belly).
-go through magazines and trash what I don't want (yes, I am one of those geeks who saves all her magazines. I've gotten much better, I try to do this once a year now, and I've cut WAY back on the amount of magazines that come into this house. Now I only get Real Simple, I cut out Martha Stewart Living, and NatGeo Adventure in the past six months; but I still horde catalogs that come in, and being a union teacher, I get another three publications a month, plus a multitude of other language-educator magazines form various organizations to which I belong).
-grocery shopping (at least to get through the next four days)
DONE. and I was able to get to the library and the drycleaners, too!
-make dinner. We stopped at the Highland farmer's market yesterday and got some great raspberries, currants, beets, and kalamata olive bread. I LOVE beets, so I need to leave myself time to roast those suckers today.
-play around with the SLR and make a flash diffuser for it. I haven't touched the thing since I got pregnant, save one rugby game this spring. :-(
-PACK HOSPITAL BAG. crazy, I must be in denial, because I am not feeling the nesting that is supposed to be surging through my body. And my usual OCD personality seems to be on vacation.... because my brain has read the books that say I can expect to go into labor at any moment, but my body is in surfer-dude mode, saying, "we have PLENTY of time, just chill!"

Another plus to the week - the XBOX is fixed, so Gian and I have enjoyed rockin' out every night instead of flipping through the channels to find some mindless program to watch. My favorite of the week: we got to do "Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi in a mystery song set. Fabulous!

How big is Baby D-Lish??

It's a melon!!

from thebump.com:
Baby’s senses are continuing to improve -- when light peeks in through your (extremely) stretched belly, those tiny eyelids and irises blink and dilate. And, baby can now recognize and react to simple songs… time to start practicing your lullabies! Growth (at least inside your womb) is starting to slow, and you may notice baby descend into your pelvis at the end of this month.

Third Trimester Fatigue has hit.

I am zonked. Every night I come home, hoping to cross something off the to-do list. But as soon as I get in, let the dogs out, feed them, and feed myself, my eyelids are hovering halfway over the eyeballs... it's not quite like first trimester, when I would really probably be able to sleep standing up, but it is pretty bad. I guess I saved enough energy to help my dad, and then it was all gone!

I wish I were so tired I could stay asleep all night. But I either have to get up to go to the bathroom (no matter how little I drink before bed) or I have to switch positions for sleeping. It feels a little like being a bug or turtle that gets stuck on its back - it really is difficult to roll over or climb out of bed now!

On the to-do list for home: take pictures of nursery; read up on both birthing and parenting; put together my baby's life book (long story that I'll share once it's finished); call daycares; call pediatricians; order crib mattress; schedule a pedicure and possible massage?; clean house.

Oh boy. Not much hope for this, as I plan on spending the weekend in the office, grading assessments... (sorry honey, I know you're coming home, so I'll try real hard to get as much done Saturday as I can!)

20/400 - just like Mom!

I found this interesting, from BabyCenter.com, especially the part about the vision. MY vision NOW without contacts is the same as it was when I was born, apparently:

Your baby's about 15.7 inches long now, and she weighs almost 3 pounds (like a head of cabbage). A pint and a half of amniotic fluid surrounds her, but that volume will decrease as she gets bigger and takes up more room in your uterus. Her eyesight continues to develop, though it's not very keen; even after she's born, she'll keep her eyes closed for a good part of the day. When she does open them, she'll respond to changes in light but will have 20/400 vision — which means she can only make out objects a few inches from her face. (Normal adult vision is 20/20.)

Alien Belly

So, I know the files are long, but you really only need to watch the first ten seconds or so to see the effect!

Raise a Baby or Play this Every Day?

Coming in September!!

I'm sorry, but I love the Beatles, and Rock Band has added the feature that there will be THREE people singing???? That's madness - and I love it!! I love the Beatles, and singing happy Beatles songs makes me happy!

(It won't take priority over the baby, I promise!!)

I'm slacking, I know.

So, I just looked at my little blog tracker, and it says that I posted 5 things in May. Awesome.

Until I saw that I posted 14 things in February!!!

My apologies. I will try to find new and exciting things to share with you all. In the beginning it was easier - everything was new and cool!! Now, it's like, more of the same.

I am trying to record my belly moving on video so you can see it. It's pretty wild... hopefully little Baby D-Lish is not camera-shy and will perform when I need him/her to!

Gettin' stuff done is exhausting.

Even when you're simply supervising.

I have had an ever-growing to-do list for quite some time now. Those of you who know me well, understand how much I HATE relying on other people to do things that I want done. I am all about instant gratification. When I want furniture moved, I move it. When I want pictures hung, I hang them.

This becomes increasingly difficult, even impossible, when baking a baby. The difficulty doubles when your husband is out of the country.

In comes Dad. Dad rocks. He came this week and did a professional job painting the baby's room. He also sanded and painted some patch jobs in the living room; put a new screen on the sliding door; hung hooks in the basement for ski equipment; painted the chair rail that he installed the last time he was here; put up a hose butler for the side of the house; watered the garden; moved furniture to prepare for Stanley Steemer; and will stay for Stanley Steemer, who is coming tomorrow. To do every rug in the house (we have a lot of wall-to-wall carpeting that has NEVER been cleaned, to my knowledge). And Dad always finds assorted odds and ends projects in between the big ones. I'm sure there are many more things he did that I am having trouble remembering. Love Dad.

Love Mom for letting Dad come to Milton, which meant she was alone in CT all week. She's a trooper (although secretly I think she enjoyed a little quiet time, too....).

But Dad alone is not Superman. He cannot lift couches or move heavy furniture by himself. Enter Kevin and Sam, my co-worker's son and nephew, who hauled a large closet's worth of stuff up from the basement to be left for Salvation Army; took a sectional couch, a workout bench, an entertainment unit, and a large carpet to the dump; moved the heavy furniture to prep for Stanley Steemer; carried my grandmother's sewing machine from the basement to the front hall; moved the bed out of the baby's room; filled in a large puddle pothole with gravel; and killed and dug up two large pricker bushes. Love them, too.

And what did I do so far, with all this activity going on? Well, I managed to windex and dust.

And with the windows open, both chores were pointless. The pollen got all over everything after I dusted. And the dogs were nose to glass all day, because they could hear everything with all the windows open. Next time? Close the windows.

I was also able to sweep the basement. And do two small loads of laundry (except the laundry is still going, at 10:00 at night). And pick up pizza for dinner.

And now I'm going to bed, because I am physically exhausted.

How big is Baby D-Lish??

It's a squash! From the bump:
Baby’s energy is surging, thanks to the formation of white fat deposits beneath the skin. (Have those kicks and jabs to the ribs tipped you off yet?) Baby is also settling into sleep and waking cycles, though -- as you’ve also probably noticed -- they don’t necessarily coincide with your own. Also this month, all five senses are finally functional, and the brain and nervous system are going through major developments.

Kind Words for the Mom-to-Be

This is from one of my weekly emails. I thought some of these points were dead-on correct, but some of them are pretty amusing!!

Understand pregnancy for what it is: A wonderful and beautiful experience, wrapped up in a colossal shift in hormones! Not only is the mom-to-be dealing with the uncomfortable symptoms of pregnancy, but also with anxieties and fears of motherhood. Expecting moms need a tremendous amount of compassion and support throughout the nine months of her pregnancy, and beyond. Here are a few things to keep in mind when offering advice, support or suggestions to a mom-to-be:

On the Issue of Pregnancy and Postpartum Weight

What to Say (With Sincerity)

  • Honey, you look terrific!
  • Pregnancy becomes you.
  • You need to gain weight, our baby's well-being depends on it!
  • Honey, you just had a baby! You look great for just having a baby!
  • You're having our baby! That automatically makes you beautiful!

What NOT to Say

  • Wow, you're BIG for____months!
  • Well, at least people know you're pregnant!
  • Should you be eating that? You don't want to gain too much weight.
  • Hey, try breastfeeding! That should take the weight off!
  • Oh, I didn't realize you already had your baby!

On the Issue of Bottle Feeding vs. Breastfeeding

What to Say

  • Whatever you decide to do. The baby will be healthy either way.
  • Let's take a breastfeeding class together.
  • I know a friend who's breastfeeding her child. I'll put you in touch with her.
  • There are lots of great formulas out there for you to choose from.
  • Breastfeeding is a beautiful experience to enjoy with your baby.

What NOT to Say

  • Breastfeeding is for mothers who are too cheap to buy formula.
  • I wouldn't breastfeed if I were you. I tried for three months and gave up because it was too hard.
  • Formula is unhealthy for babies. He'll be sick all the time.
  • Mothers who love their babies breastfeed their babies.
  • Breastfeeding is "dirty" and perverted, especially if done in public.

On the Issue of Child Rearing

What to Say

  • I would love to give you advice on anything you need. Just let me know.
  • I've got some great books on parenting. Would you like to borrow them?
  • Let's take a parenting class together. That way, we can be prepared.
  • Parenthood is challenging, but I know you'll be great at it!
  • Follow your heart. You know what's best for your child.

What NOT to Say

  • Well, here is what I (my mother, Aunt Mabel, Dr. So-and-So, etc.) think/thinks is best for your baby.
  • This is the only book worth reading on parenting!
  • Just you wait when this baby is born; you'll see how difficult parenting is!
  • Always/Never pamper your children, give them time outs, etc. (In fact, eradicate the words "always" and "never" from your vocabulary when discussing parenting!)
  • Well, if I were you...

Happy Mother to Be Day

I got flowers today from my awesome nephew, Luigi. It was so sweet! I also got mom-to-be cards from my sister and mom - very cool. It is weird being on the receiving end of a holiday that for the duration of my life so far has been one on which I always give gifts and cards...

I kind of like it.

For the record, I got my Mother's Day gift from Gian about two weeks ago... he cleared out the rest of our rock wall so we can plant flowers and shrubs.

What size is baby D-lish this week?

It's an eggplant!
from thebump:
Let your spouse put an ear to your belly -- he might be able to pick up baby's heartbeat (no stethoscope required). Inside the womb, the formation of tiny capillaries is giving baby a healthy pink glow. Baby's also soaking up your antibodies, getting the immune system ready for life outside the womb. Eyes are forming, and baby will soon perfect the blink -- perfect for batting those freshly grown lashes.

Don't forget to vote!!

Take the polls!

Many people are starting to make predictions - I thought it'd be fun to get a consensus on the opinions. C'mon, humor Pregalicious a little.

Vote now for Baby D-Lish!! (hopefully the polls work!) The polls are listed to the right of this post - just twitch your eyes over to the right a bit! For some reason, the questions are really spread out, so you will probably have to scroll down to answer all three.

Thanks for participating!

Bally Pic - week 25

Can public schools PLEASE get some air conditioning for second floor rooms??? I'll even take jet-sized fans at this point.... I am so glad that we have air conditioning at home. I am sluggish in this weather!!

I'm cute - and I'll take it!!

We had a district-wide conference day yesterday, which meant I got to see a lot of my colleagues from the other schools in town. The phrase of choice was "You look so cute!"

Now, normally I despise the word cute - it makes me think of kittens, or a round-faced, rosy-cheeked child. But being pregnant, I'll take it!! It sounds a lot better than, "You look....(dramatic pause as person searches for adjective).... good." "Good" in this case means "you look pregnant, you don't look that good, but you don't look really bad, either."

Cute is good, during pregnancy.

Found out from our fellow cloth-diaper friends that the one and only diaper-laundering service in the area went out of business. So, we are left with: wash cloth diapers ourselves, or bite the bullet and buy disposables. Hm.

Ultrasound Pictures, 20 weeks

Baby D at 20 weeks. His/her head is on the left, with a little leg on the right.
Baby D's close-up.

With a widdle hand! Aw!!

Not the clearest, but that's Baby D's right foot in the middle. (Yeah, the tech had to really explain it to us for us to see, too.)

This picture of both feet is much better.

Another close-up.
